Twitter Annotations will allow metadata and keywords to be embedded within tweets without impacting the 140 character count. This feature (not yet released) has enormous potential to drive traffic, promotions, and gauge public opinion around certain topics. It also has the potential to perform business functions such as polling readers and driving instant emotional donation through various plug-ins. It's not released yet, but it's worth watching.
